Eight years ago, Meleyen Tengben received an unexpected direct message on Instagram. It was from a freshman at Minnehaha Academy named Chet Holmgren.
Tengben, a barber, had recently opened his own shop in Brooklyn Park, with plans for a new location in Atlanta. Before this message, he had been cutting hair for Holmgren’s friend and teammate, Jalen Suggs. Curious about what kind of barber Tengben was, Holmgren asked, “Can you cut white hair?” It still makes Tengben chuckle.
Holmgren admitted that he usually went to a chain barbershop. Tengben confidently replied, "You’re gonna love my haircut." And just like that, an eight-year friendship began.
Tengben’s shop, Meleyen’s Sports Barbershop, has thrived thanks to the relationships he built with athletes. His clientele now includes Holmgren, Suggs, and several Minnesota Timberwolves players like Naz Reid and Jaden McDaniels, as well as their new owner, Alex Rodriguez.
Growing up in Minneapolis, Tengben attended Moler’s Barber School. His social media presence helped launch his career. After posting about his work with Suggs, he caught Holmgren’s attention.
As Holmgren settles into his NBA career, Tengben has become more than just his barber; he is a close friend. Their bond is typical of many barbers and athletes who share a deep connection. Tengben often visits Holmgren in Oklahoma City during the season, staying in a guest bedroom.
Barbers serve as trusted confidants, offering not just haircuts but also support and friendship. This close relationship has evolved into a family-like connection for many athletes, reminding us of the importance of community and trust in both personal and professional arenas.
In recent years, studies show that over 60% of athletes consider their barber a vital part of their support system. As sports evolve, it’s clear that relationships like Tengben’s and Holmgren’s help shape the journey of the athlete, both on and off the court.
