LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Police Department is offering a $50,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest in the hit-and-run that claimed the life of 65-year-old Jose “Joey” Melesio from Chicago.
This tragic accident happened on April 27, near the intersection of South Figueroa Street and 75th Street. Melesio was visiting family and was excited to attend a Dodgers-Cubs game that weekend. He was walking when a vehicle struck him at a high speed and didn’t stop to help, making it a felony hit-and-run.
Police are searching for a small, four-door sedan that may be white, gray, or silver. “We haven’t captured a clear image of the driver yet,” said LAPD Detective Ryan Moreno.
Melesio was remembered fondly by his family as a loving man. His cousin, Oscar Flores, made a heartfelt plea for the driver to come forward: “Joey was a great man to all his family. Please, we urge you to do the right thing.”
Authorities are also reaching out to auto body shops to look for any small sedans with recent front-end damage. Tips can be shared anonymously by calling the LAPD.
The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs and to transport Melesio back to Chicago.
