Brett Veach, the general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, recently shared that the team is preparing for Travis Kelce to play in 2025. He is confident that the veteran tight end has the passion to continue his career.
“From what we discussed at the end of the season, Travis is fired up to get back on the field,” Veach said at the scouting combine in Indianapolis. “We’re looking forward to having him back with us.”
Head coach Andy Reid, however, offered a more cautious take on Kelce’s future. Following the Chiefs’ loss in Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles, Reid encouraged Kelce to take some time off to think about whether he wants to keep playing or consider retirement.
“As of now, that’s where he’s at,” Reid explained, hinting that Kelce might be weighing his options.
Kelce, who is 35 years old, expressed his desire to play again during interviews in the lead-up to the Super Bowl. However, his comments after the game on his “New Heights” podcast were less clear. “I know everyone’s curious about my plans for next year, but I’m just taking it one day at a time,” he said. “No big decisions are being made right now.”
He has an $11.5 million roster bonus due on March 15, which would be activated in the final year of his contract, but Veach mentioned that Kelce doesn’t have a strict deadline to decide.
In the Super Bowl, Kelce had a tough game, catching just four passes for 39 yards. It capped off a season where he recorded the lowest receiving yards (823) and touchdowns (3) of his career, not counting his rookie year. Still, he led the team with 97 receptions.
As the Chiefs look ahead to the next season, Kelce’s decision will greatly impact the team’s strategy moving forward.
