China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, recently criticized the United States for its “two-faced” actions regarding trade. He condemned the increased tariffs on Chinese products, warning that such moves could create a “law of the jungle” in international relations due to Donald Trump’s “America First” policy. During a parliamentary session in China, Wang stated that no nation should think it can suppress China while maintaining friendly ties. He emphasized that China would “firmly counter” any US pressure.
Wang’s remarks came shortly after the US imposed a tariff hike on various Chinese imports, raising them to 20%. He described these tariffs as “arbitrary” and noted that they put additional pressure on China’s economic growth. Recent customs data indicated that China’s exports grew by only 2.3% in January and February, which falls below expectations and adds to the challenge of achieving its GDP growth target of 5% for the year.
Amidst rising tensions, the Chinese foreign ministry issued strong statements about the US, declaring that China is ready to fight back in any “tariff war.” Yet, Wang’s tone was comparatively restrained. He pointed out that major countries should respect international obligations and not bully smaller nations. He warned that ignoring global order could lead to chaos where only the most powerful prevail, harming weaker countries in the process.
Wang also highlighted China’s resilience in innovation, referencing the success of the artificial intelligence firm DeepSeek. This company launched an AI model that rivals some of the best in the US, despite US sanctions aimed at limiting China’s access to advanced technologies. Wang stated, “Where there is blockade, there is breakthrough,” which underlines China’s determination to push forward despite challenges.
In other areas of foreign policy, Wang expressed China’s support for the Palestinian people’s claim to Gaza, opposing any plans that contradict this. He also mentioned that China is prepared to collaborate with the international community to pursue peace in Ukraine, while affirming its strong ties with Russia. He noted that the Ukraine conflict could have been avoided and highlighted that one nation’s security shouldn’t come at the expense of another’s.
When discussing relations with Europe, Wang adopted a more positive approach, expressing confidence in Europe as a valuable partner for China. He acknowledged concerns within China about how the war in Ukraine might impact their relationship with Europe, emphasizing the importance of fostering strong ties.
Finally, Wang characterized China as a stable force amid global uncertainty, suggesting that it could provide needed stability to a turbulent world.
