Chris McCarthy, former co-CEO of Paramount, is joining forces with Taylor Sheridan at NBCUniversal. Sheridan, known for hits like Yellowstone, is bringing his production skills over to NBCU.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, McCarthy will help create new shows and manage the relationship with Sheridan, who plans to shift his film and TV deals to NBCU. While Sheridan’s successful series, including the Yellowstone prequels, will remain with Paramount, they’re tasked with developing a fresh slate of programming together.
Sheridan has built a dynamic roster at his production company, 101 Studios, led by David Glasser. The two have partnered previously on the Paramount+ series Mobland. McCarthy has a strong track record of supporting Sheridan, granting him substantial budgets and freedom to pick filming locations, primarily in Montana and Texas.
NBCU chief Donna Langley successfully hired Sheridan, offering a deal potentially worth up to $1 billion, depending on certain milestones. This package reportedly included the appointment of a key executive of Sheridan’s choosing.
In a broader context, this shift illustrates the competitive landscape in the entertainment industry. Networks are vying for top talent as they navigate an increasingly crowded market. Research from the Motion Picture Association shows that streaming continues to dominate, with nearly 80% of U.S. households subscribing to at least one service. This makes partnerships crucial.
As for McCarthy, he left Paramount earlier this year when Paramount underwent significant restructuring after a media acquisition by David Ellison’s Skydance. The entertainment industry is always changing, but the reunification of McCarthy and Sheridan could lead to exciting new content in the near future.
