It really does take a village to make a movie—and to address the wage gap in Hollywood.
Christina Applegate experienced this firsthand during the making of the classic 2004 comedy, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Initially, she received an offer that was surprisingly low. On a recent episode of The View, promoting her memoir You With the Sad Eyes, she revealed, “the initial offer was… a little… offensive.”
Applegate knew her worth and wasn’t going to settle. Fortunately, Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay recognized her value and stepped in. They altered the offer to make it fairer. Applegate noted, “They wanted me bad enough and they said, ‘Well, we’re going to chip in.'” Their support made a huge difference for her, turning the project into one of her best experiences.
Before Anchorman, Applegate was already a known name, thanks to her role as Kelly Bundy on Married… With Children. However, she called her time on Anchorman a transformative lesson. She shared that working with gifted actors like Steve Carell in an improv setting was akin to a masterclass—something aspiring actors often pay big bucks for. “It was just absolutely magical,” she said.
Anchorman was a box office success. It grossed over three times its $50 million budget. Fast forward nearly ten years, and the team came back together for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. Applegate recalled the laughs she had while filming the sequel, saying, “the first three days of work I was laughing so hard I thought I was going to burst something in my brain.”
Today, these stories highlight the ongoing issue of wage gaps in the industry. Recent reports show that women still earn about 82 cents for every dollar men make in Hollywood. This disparity reinforces the importance of support and allyship, as seen in Applegate’s experience.
In a time where more actors and actresses are speaking out against wage inequalities, stories like Applegate’s serve as both a reminder and an inspiration for change in the industry.
