Colorado School Fined for Fans’ Controversial Anti-Mormon Chants: What You Need to Know

The Big 12 Conference has fined Colorado $50,000 and issued a public reprimand following offensive chants from Buffaloes fans directed at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during a recent football game against BYU.

League commissioner Brett Yormark responded firmly, stating, “Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference.” He appreciated Colorado’s quick apology but emphasized the league’s zero tolerance for such behavior.

During the game, fans from Colorado’s student section were heard chanting, “F— the Mormons.” The incident escalated tensions, especially given the ongoing discussions in society about the need for respect and inclusivity in sports.

In response, Colorado’s head coach Deion Sanders addressed the matter in a press conference. He distanced the university from the actions of the fans, remarking, “That’s not indicative of who we are. Our student body is phenomenal.” He attributed the behavior to a few individuals, suggesting they might have been under the influence.

Additionally, Colorado’s chancellor and athletic director condemned the chants in a joint statement, expressing disappointment and reaffirming the university’s commitment to values of respect and inclusion. They assured that those responsible would face accountability under the university’s fan conduct policies.

BYU also responded, calling for enthusiasm in sports without crossing the line into discrimination, highlighting the importance of respectful fandom.

This incident marks a significant point in the rivalry, being the first Big 12 matchup between Colorado and BYU since Colorado’s return to the conference last season. They had faced off previously in the Alamo Bowl, a game won by BYU 36-14.
