IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — A dedicated group of organizations is on a mission to collect 100,000 pounds of food for those in need. For six years, groups like JustServe, Melaleuca, Scouting America, Idaho National Laboratory, and the Community Food Security organization have come together each October to meet this ambitious goal.
Volunteers are hard at work, packing boxes and stacking pallets of donated goods. These are then loaded onto trucks for delivery to the Idaho Falls Community Food Basket.
“Each truck can carry about 12 boxes, with each box holding between 800 and 1,000 pounds of food,” explains Launie Shelman, a Community Outreach Specialist. “Today, we aim to collect around 50,000 pounds, not including what local grocery stores will contribute.”
Donations are being accepted every weekend throughout October, and anyone looking to help can drop off contributions at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Sunnyside and Holmes.
This initiative is not just about food. It reflects a growing movement toward community support and engagement. According to a recent study by Feeding America, about 35 million people in the U.S. face food insecurity. Events like these play a crucial role in addressing this pressing issue and fostering community spirit.
The rise of social media has also helped amplify these efforts. Many locals are sharing their experiences, encouraging their friends to join in, and using hashtags like #FeedIdaho to spread awareness.
As we work together, we can make a tangible impact on our community. Every can and box helps fill a plate and nourish families in need.
