When Apple launched the iPhone 16e last month, it created a buzz, especially among photography enthusiasts. Sebastiaan de With, known for his expertise in camera technology through the Halide app, took a closer look at the iPhone 16e’s camera capabilities. This model features a new 48-megapixel camera, but how does it stack up against the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro?
At first glance, all three models appear similar, boasting a 48-megapixel Fusion camera with 1x and 2x shooting options. However, a closer examination reveals important differences. The iPhone 16 Pro has a more advanced f/1.78 aperture camera, while the 16 and 16e use an f/1.6 aperture. Notably, the iPhone 16e lacks sensor-shift optical image stabilization, a feature included in the iPhone 16. This suggests the 16e may not deliver the same picture quality, particularly under challenging conditions.
De With points out that the iPhone 16e combines modern image processing enabled by the A18 chip with an older camera component. With just one Wide lens, it misses out on features like Macro mode and Night mode for Portrait shots. Additionally, options such as Cinematic mode for videos and the ProRAW format are not available.
In testing, the iPhone 16e produced warmer images but struggled with detail compared to the 16 Pro, especially in low light. The smaller sensor resulted in less quality for 2x shots. De With noted that while the 16e isn’t quite on the level of the 16 Pro or even the standard 16, it performs comparably to older models like the iPhone 14 Pro. A key drawback is the absence of sensor-shift stabilization, which affects its performance in low-lit environments.
Interestingly, while some users miss advanced features, others appreciate the unique aesthetic the iPhone 16e offers. De With described its sensor as having a grainy, moody quality, which he found enjoyable. As he puts it, it has a certain vibe that appeals to some photographers.
In a world where smartphone cameras are crucial for everyday users, it’s fascinating to see how choices in features cater to different preferences. As Apple continues to innovate, understanding these differences can help users make informed decisions.
