Other names being considered include Tommy Lloyd from Arizona and Dusty May from Michigan, among others. Hubert Davis was let go after a solid run of 125 wins and 54 losses, boasting a .698 win percentage over five seasons. Although he had a strong first year, leading UNC to the NCAA Tournament finals, his teams struggled to advance past the Sweet 16 in subsequent years. Donovan is no stranger to North Carolina, having been mentioned as a candidate for other top jobs in the past, including when John Calipari left Kentucky in 2024. He served as an assistant coach at Kentucky in the early ’90s under Rick Pitino and has a rich history in college coaching. He previously led Florida for 19 years, achieving remarkable success with two national championships.
Despite his past achievements, Donovan’s current stint with the Bulls has been less successful. He signed a multi-year extension just last summer, but the team is struggling. Without playoff success, both Donovan and the Bulls may seek a fresh start, making the UNC position an appealing opportunity.
