The Sahara Desert may soon look very different. New studies show that rainfall in this region could rise by an astonishing 75% by the end of the century. This shift is set to impact millions of lives across Africa.

Research from the University of Illinois at Chicago, published in npj Climate and Atmospheric Science, examines how climate change alters rainfall patterns in Africa. “The Sahara is projected to almost double its historical precipitation levels,” noted Thierry Ndetatsin Taguela, who led the study. This is surprising for such a dry region.

Interestingly, as the world warms, the atmosphere can hold more moisture. This leads to increased rain in some areas of Africa, while other areas experience drought.

The research team used 40 climate models to predict how summer rains will evolve from 2050 to 2099. Both moderate and high levels of greenhouse gas emissions were considered. In each scenario, Africa shows a general trend toward increased rainfall, with the Sahara leading the charge.

Green Sahara

While the Sahara sees a notable 75% rise, areas like Southeast Africa could see a 24% increase in rainfall. Central-southern Africa might experience a 17% boost, although southwestern Africa could face a slight drop of 5%. With rainfall critical for agriculture, over 1.5 billion Africans could feel the impact of changing weather patterns, particularly in East and West Africa. A 3°C rise in global temperatures could lead to food shortages, driving up the need for food imports.

Additionally, increased humidity in the Sahara presents new challenges. The Central Sahel will see more rainfall, but areas like the Western Sahel may face reduced precipitation due to more stable atmospheric conditions. Meanwhile, southern Africa is likely to experience harsher droughts, especially during summer months.

These changes in climate and rainfall pose risks and opportunities. As Africa grapples with these dynamics, communities may need to adapt their agricultural practices and resource management strategies. It’s a crucial moment for the continent, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions to ensure food security amidst shifting climates.
