Micah Parsons is on the verge of a record-setting contract with the Dallas Cowboys. According to reports from Clarence Hill of All City DLLS, the team has proposed making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
Both Parsons and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones are on board with this agreement, which would surpass recent deals for NFL stars like Myles Garrett and Ja’Marr Chase. However, there’s a catch: Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, was not included in these discussions. As a result, Parsons will not finalize any deal without Mulugheta’s consent, and the two parties haven’t spoken since the NFL Scouting Combine.
Garrett is currently the highest-paid defender with an annual average of $40 million. Meanwhile, Chase’s contract has made him the top non-quarterback at $40.25 million per year.
Cowboys executive Stephen Jones has defended the team’s strategy of engaging directly with players. He mentioned that they’ve had similar discussions with past players like Tony Romo and DeMarcus Lawrence.
“We aim to maintain an open-door policy,” Jones said. “Some players prefer to handle negotiations directly, and Micah is one of those players.”
Recent studies show that about 65% of NFL players prefer to have their agents handle negotiations, highlighting a trend toward professional representation in contract deals. Yet, Parsons seems to defy this norm, illustrating a personal approach to contract negotiations.
It will be interesting to see how this situation unfolds. Will Parsons and Mulugheta come to an agreement with the Cowboys? Only time will tell. For the latest news on player contracts and NFL trends, check out ESPN’s coverage.
