FRISCO, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant move this offseason. They’ve traded a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 seventh-round pick to the Buffalo Bills for cornerback Kaiir Elam and a 2025 sixth-round pick.
At just 24 years old, Elam has already made his mark in the NFL over the past three seasons in Buffalo. He started 12 games there and showed flashes of his potential.
In 2024, Elam played in 13 games, starting four. He recorded 26 tackles, two tackles for loss, and two pass deflections. The previous season was less favorable for him; he missed most of it due to an ankle injury but made appearances in three regular season games along with both of Buffalo’s playoff matches.
His rookie year was standout. He started six games, accumulating 41 tackles, six pass deflections, and three interceptions. His first interception came in Week 5 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he also picked off a pass during the playoffs against the Miami Dolphins.
Elam was picked 23rd overall in the 2022 NFL Draft after a solid college career at Florida. He was recognized as a standout player, making the SEC All-Freshman team in 2019 and earning second-team All-SEC honors in 2020.
Interestingly, there’s a family connection to the Cowboys. Kaiir’s father, Abram Elam, played as a safety for Dallas from 2006 to 2011. Abram had a successful eight-year career, playing for five different teams.
With Elam’s arrival, the Cowboys have added three first-round picks to their roster this offseason. They also signed Solomon Thomas, who was the third overall pick in the 2017 draft, and Payton Turner, the 28th overall pick from 2021.
This deal comes at a crucial time for the Cowboys, especially with Jourdan Lewis joining the Jacksonville Jaguars. With several cornerbacks struggling with injuries, Elam provides much-needed depth. This trade could be a chance for him to revitalize his career and showcase his skills in Dallas.
As the Cowboys look to strengthen their defense, fans and analysts alike will be watching to see how this move plays out. With Elam’s background and potential, there’s hope he can become a key player in the upcoming season. For more details on player trades and statistics, you can visit ESPN.
