Critical Reflection: Why Now Is the Time for Moral Accountability in Gaza

A humanitarian crisis in Gaza has escalated into a dire emergency. For over two months, Israel has halted all humanitarian aid and supplies to the region. The World Food Program last delivered food on April 25, leaving two million Palestinians, nearly half of whom are children, struggling to survive on just one meal every two to three days.

At makeshift clinics run by the American Near East Refugee Aid, we’re witnessing alarming signs of starvation. Recently, lab tests revealed ketones in a third of urine samples—an indicator of starvation. This marks the first significant uptick in such findings since we began testing in October 2024. Food, fuel, and medical supplies are either depleted or running dangerously low.

This situation isn’t just a logistical failure; it’s an intentional system of deprivation. The blockade, characterized by delays and excessive security measures, has turned aid into a tool of war. High-ranking Israeli officials have stated their intention to use starvation to pressure Hamas, a tactic that raises serious concerns about violations of international law. Many fear this strategy is aimed at forcing Palestinians from Gaza altogether.

The recent short-lived cease-fire only highlighted the inadequacy of the aid provided, as it was cut off entirely just two months later. Hunger is being weaponized in this conflict, and experts warn that this approach could lead to catastrophic consequences.
