CT Chief Manufacturing Officer Transitions to New Academic Role: What It Means for the Industry

Connecticut’s manufacturing landscape is buzzing with news as Paul Lavoie, the state’s chief manufacturing officer, gets ready to take on a new role. Soon, he’ll be the first vice president of innovation and applied technology at the University of New Haven, starting in July.

Lavoie has an impressive background. Appointed by Governor Ned Lamont in February 2022, he previously managed a manufacturing company in Cromwell. His new job will be pivotal as he leads the development of the university’s Research and Development Park, spanning 130,000 square feet next to the campus. This center aims to innovate in fields like advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, and biotech.

President Jens Frederiksen of the university highlighted Lavoie’s visionary leadership, stating he is well-suited to bring the R&D Park’s vision to life. With Lavoie at the helm, the university plans to strengthen ties with industry leaders like Sikorsky and Pratt & Whitney to ensure students are ready for future careers in advanced technology sectors.

Lavoie expressed his admiration for the university’s mission, noting that this initiative will create valuable opportunities for students and local companies in a rapidly changing economy.

Manufacturing has a strong history in Connecticut, with nearly 30,000 people employed in the aerospace sector alone, making it one of the highest concentrations in the U.S. In recent years, the state has put efforts into bolstering manufacturing through bipartisan initiatives, including the establishment of a manufacturing caucus.

Looking ahead, Lavoie will also be speaking at the Connecticut Manufacturing Innovation Forum on September 11, showcasing his impact on the state’s manufacturing future.
