Huskies Sweep Arizona in Exciting Home Opener
The Washington Huskies volleyball team kicked off their home season with a thrilling win over the Arizona Wildcats, winning in straight sets: 25-23, 25-23, 25-22. The match, held in the Alaska Airlines Arena, showcased the team’s best performance yet, in front of nearly 3,000 enthusiastic fans.
This victory was significant not just for the team; it also ended Arizona’s impressive 11-match winning streak, which included last season’s NIVC tournament win and a strong start to this season.
Head Coach Leslie Gabriel expressed her joy in returning home. She noted, “Playing in our arena with our fans is so energizing. We were really excited for this match and have another one coming soon.”
The game was intensely competitive. Both teams remained close throughout, with Washington building small leads late in sets two and three. Their ability to convert crucial points made the difference. Gabriel praised her team’s grit and potential for improvement, stating, “We competed well. There were moments that weren’t perfect, but we fought hard.”
Washington’s offense improved with each set. They started at .195 hitting percentage in the first set, but increased to .394 in the second and a stunning .455 in the third, finishing with an impressive .336 match average. In comparison, Arizona hit .262. The Huskies also outperformed in kills with a 47-42 edge and digs at 45-44, while Arizona led in aces (7-5) and blocks (9 to 6).
Senior transfer Alexa Markley stood out with a team-high 14 kills at .323. Kierstyn Barton added 13 kills, hitting .333. Sophomore setter Alexis Haury achieved a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs. She worked well with middle hitters Julia Hunt and Katy Wessels, who collectively had six kills and minimal errors. Wessels also led with five blocks.
Notably, Huskies volleyball has been gaining attention in recent seasons. According to the NCAA, Washington ranked in the top 10 for attendance last year, showing growing community support. This season, fans can keep an eye on the team’s journey as they prepare for Sunday’s matchup against San Diego, another formidable opponent.
With a season filled with promise, Washington’s Huskies are focused on capitalizing on their strengths and learning from every matchup, aiming for even greater success.
