SB20 World Championship 2025: Day 3 Highlights
Day 3 of the SB20 World Championship in Singapore was a test of skill. The light and shifting winds challenged the 53 boats on the water. Yet, the racers rose to the occasion and completed two thrilling races.
As the championship moves into its second half, the British team Xcellent, led by John Pollard, David Chapman, and Henry Wetherell, are on top with a total of 30 points after securing two third-place finishes today.
Right behind them is Paul McCartney’s team, Porco Rosso, just three points away. While their performance wasn’t as strong as Day 2, they still held their ground in the top ten.
Will Sargent, last year’s SB20 World champion, expressed the challenge of this regatta venue. “It’s by far the toughest I’ve raced in,” he remarked.
The French youth team, FF Voile, showed resilience, finishing sixth in Race 8 and moving up to third overall with 51 points. Though they slipped a bit in Race 9, they remain in contention. Paul Loiseau, their skipper, shared their goal: “We aim to be the Youth World Champion and finish on the podium.”
The Race Committee had their work cut out for them, trying to navigate the tricky conditions. Race skipper Mike Buchanan noted the challenge of predicting which way the wind would blow as they sailed close to the shore.
In the top five, team Pinch, led by Morgan Peach, is performing well with a crew of four. Arran Holman, the mainsheet trimmer, spoke highly of the teamwork: “Eirini keeps things relaxed and focused, which is key to our success.”
Race 8 was won by Belgium’s Go with the Flow, guided by Bart Tygat. He described the race as complicated but rewarding. Following this, Race 9 saw the Dubai-based team KODA take first place, with skipper Paolo Borghesi leading a team of sailors from diverse backgrounds.
With nine of the planned thirteen races complete, the competition is heating up. The forecast hints at more challenging conditions ahead, including rain and unpredictable winds. It’s anyone’s guess who will come out on top.
As it stands, can team Xcellent hold their lead? The next few days will be critical in deciding the champion of this exceptional event.
