MOBILE, Ala. – The first day of the Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championship kicked off at Jaguar Track with some standout performances from James Madison University (JMU). Five athletes set personal bests, and two are heading to the finals in their events.
Texas State currently leads the championship with 41 points, followed by Louisiana with 32 points, and South Alabama at 31 points. JMU ranks 13th but still has two days left to compete.
Sky Bleu Tyson shined in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 1:00.04, good enough for fifth in the prelims and a spot in Saturday’s finals. This time also places her fourth in JMU’s history for the event. In the 1,500 meters, Carol-Anne Garrett achieved a personal best of 4:38.05, advancing to the finals. Sidney Walters followed close behind, finishing with a PR of 4:39.06. The day wrapped up with Elizabeth Scarpa in the 10,000 meters, who improved her time to 37:55.28 for a 12th-place finish.
In field events, Peyton Mermon ended her freshman year with a career-best javelin throw of 38.89 meters, ranking seventh in JMU’s history.
It’s worth noting that the competition is fierce, with athletes pushing their limits. According to a recent NCAA report, participation in track and field continues to grow, highlighting the sport’s appeal among student-athletes. This year, schools have seen a slight uptick in freshman enrollments in track programs, indicating a rising interest.
