CHICAGO – DePaul softball kicked off their final homestand with a thrilling 6-5 win over Illinois State at Cacciatore Stadium. This marks their sixth victory in the last seven games.
Sophomore first baseman Chelsea Parker stood out, going 3-for-3, hitting two home runs, and driving in five RBIs. She now leads the team with 13 home runs and 44 RBIs. Junior Morgan Rogers also contributed with two hits, including her 13th double of the season, while Emersyn Coulter and Brooke Cwick each added a hit.
In the pitching department, sophomore Gwen Baker started the game but played just 1.2 innings. Hannah Messer took over for 3 innings, and senior Bella Nigey finished strong, throwing 2.1 innings without allowing any runs. Nigey’s four strikeouts helped secure her third save of the season, while Messer’s record improved to 8-11.
The game had its ups and downs. Illinois State initially took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. But DePaul quickly responded. Parker and Lydia Ettema got on base, and Cwick’s double brought in the first run.
In the third inning, Rogers’ bunt hit set off another scoring opportunity. Parker’s three-run homer put DePaul ahead 4-2. Later, Rogers hit her 13th double, leading to Parker’s second home run, extending the lead to 6-2.
Illinois State made a late comeback, scoring three runs in the fifth to narrow the gap to 6-5, but DePaul held on for the win.
Looking ahead, the Blue Demons will wrap up their homestand with a three-game BIG EAST series against Butler from April 24-26. All games will be streamed on ESPN+.
In sports, momentum can shift quickly. DePaul’s recent success showcases how teamwork and individual excellence can lead to wins. With Parker’s impressive season, she’s on track for a spot in the record books, especially if she maintains her performance.
