Exclusive: ‘Obsession’ Director Curry Barker Takes on A24’s Thrilling Reimagining of ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’

Curry Barker is making big waves in Hollywood as he steps into the director’s chair for A24’s upcoming reimagining of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” This project is a fresh take on the classic 1974 horror film created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel.

Although details about Barker’s vision for Leatherface and his unfortunate victims remain under wraps, the excitement is palpable. This project is part of a larger strategy, as a “Texas Chainsaw” TV series is also in development.

Barker’s rise in the film industry has been rapid. His earlier film “Obsession,” which explores a dark love story, was a hit at the Toronto International Film Festival, selling for an impressive $14 million. This new film marks a major leap from his $800 debut feature “Milk & Serial” on YouTube.

Currently, Barker is also working on “Anything But Ghosts,” where he serves as director, co-writer, and star. This film follows two fraudulent paranormal investigators who unexpectedly confront real ghosts, challenging the fabric of their lies. Alongside this, he performs in a sketch comedy duo called That’s a Bad Idea.

The new “Chainsaw” film is being produced by a seasoned team, including Roy Lee and Steven Schneider of Spooky Pictures. There are nine films in the Texas Chainsaw series, showing its lasting appeal. The last installment was released in 2022, showing that audiences still have a taste for horror.

A24 secured the film rights in a competitive auction last year, outbidding companies like Blumhouse. With A24’s innovative approach, they aim to honor the film’s legacy while bringing something new to the table.

Horror films like “Chainsaw” have always sparked opinions, especially among fans who remember the original’s groundbreaking approach. Social media buzz suggests that audiences are eager to see how Barker will blend tradition with innovation. Will this reimagining haunt audiences like the original? Only time will tell.
