DeSales University Men’s Track and Field Team Shines at Cornell University: Highlights and Insights

Ithaca, NY (February 22, 2025) – The DeSales University indoor track and field team took part in the Marc Deneault Invitational at Cornell University. Cornell’s Barton Hall has been an iconic venue for track events since the 1920s. It features a modern track and has seen many updates over the years.

In the weight throw, junior Giovanni Wellington secured 4th place with a personal best of 15.18 meters. Sophomore Cameron Williams followed closely, taking 5th with a throw of 14.99 meters. Senior Jacob Schaeffer placed 11th with a distance of 13.46 meters.

During the shot put, Jacob Schaeffer again showed his talent, finishing 8th with a throw of 13.92 meters, while senior Nick Chinn came in 17th with 11.32 meters.

The distance events showcased some impressive performances. In the 5000 meters, first-year James Viglianti finished 4th with a time of 17:07.89. Junior James Cook closely trailed in 5th place, finishing in 17:30.53, and sophomore Andrew Sidorski claimed 6th with a time of 17:43.19.

In the sprint events, senior Sam Estherson earned 5th place in the 60-meter hurdles with a final time of 8.39 seconds. In the 60 meters, junior Tyler McCulloch placed 9th with a time of 7.14 seconds, while Estherson took 14th in 7.39 seconds. Freshman Bryce Guthier finished 17th with a quick 7.43 seconds.

For the mile, senior Josh Deremer not only finished 14th but also qualified for the MAC with an impressive time of 4:35.60. Senior Tim Connell and junior Jordan Gallo followed in 17th and 20th places, with times of 4:47.29 and 5:02.48, respectively. Another freshman, Brian Samayoa, took 22nd with 5:11.68.

Sophomore Colin Marsh placed 9th in the 400 meters with a time of 53.32 seconds, qualifying for the MAC. Lens Demosthene followed in 19th place with a time of 59.36 seconds.

In the long jump, two DeSales athletes tied for 12th place. Both Weston Simak and Jonathan Castronovo leaped 6.19 meters. Sophomore Javell McMichael finished 24th with a jump of 5.63 meters. For the triple jump, Jonathan Castronovo nabbed 8th with a jump of 12.78 meters, and Weston Simak took 12th with 12.08 meters. Junior Peter Skulski finished 18th with 11.27 meters.

Junior Jordan Gallo had a great run in the 600 meters, finishing 5th in 1:42.53, while freshman Michael Arculeo was 6th in 1:46.12. In the 800 meters, Jozef Callano finished 4th with a stellar 1:57.02, securing a spot for the AARTC. Joey Wilson also qualified with a 9th place finish and a time of 2:02.67. First-year Alex Porambo took 14th with a personal best of 2:04.19.

In the 200 meters, Tyler McCulloch placed 9th in 23.19 seconds, while Bryce Guthier came in 16th with a time of 23.76, also qualifying for the MAC. Jack Jacobson rounded out 20th with a time of 24.64.

Sophomore Dean Ricco demonstrated his endurance in the 3000 meters, finishing 6th with a time of 9:07.15, which qualified him for the MAC. First-year Bryce Phillips took 7th, clocking in at 9:15.90. Sophomore Dylan Doskocil finished 13th in 9:47.53.

In the 4×400 meter relay, DeSales entered two teams. Relay team “A,” featuring Bryce Guthier, Josh Deremer, Alex Porambo, and anchor Jozef Callano, finished with a time of 3:34.27. Relay team “B,” including Joey Wilson, Dean Ricco, Bryce Phillips, and anchor Brian Samayoa, finished in 3:56.74.

Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will compete in the MAC Indoor Championships from February 28th to March 2nd, hosted by Alvernia University.
