Desperate Times: Gazan Children Stand in Long Lines for Food Amid Growing Starvation Crisis

(GAZA) — The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening. Recently, unsettling videos emerged showing children waiting in line for food, empty pots in their hands.

The World Food Programme warns that two million people in Gaza are facing extreme hunger. Without urgent action, famine seems inevitable. In one video, children gathered near a community kitchen, eager for hot food. Unfortunately, during the chaos, a child was burned when soup spilled on him. Another clip showed a child desperately trying to recover flour mixed with dirt from the ground.

UNICEF emphasized the need for immediate assistance, stating, “The children of Gaza need protection. They need food, water, and medicine. They require a ceasefire to ensure their safety.”

Recently, humanitarian aid has faced significant challenges. Over a dozen trucks from the World Food Programme (WFP) were looted in southern Gaza. “These trucks carried essential supplies for those who desperately need help,” WFP noted, highlighting the rising insecurity due to hunger and anxiety.

Since March 2, the Israeli government has maintained a blockade on humanitarian aid entering Gaza, asserting it was necessary to pressure Hamas to release hostages. This blockade has led to widespread malnutrition, causing serious health issues for many, according to various international organizations.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification platform reported that one in five people, about 500,000 individuals, faces starvation in Gaza. Of these, 71,000 children urgently need treatment for acute malnutrition.

Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, a physician who has volunteered in Gaza, shared his disturbing experience at the U.N. where he described a day in March as one of the most shocking of his career. He had to care for 221 trauma patients after a ceasefire was broken. He criticized the new aid distribution plan, labeling it as a manipulation of humanitarian aid.

“If this continues, there will be no Palestinian doctors left,” Sidhwa warned. “We are witnessing a devastating loss of life—children suffering from hunger and disease, deaths that could be prevented.”
