DFW and Love Field Flights Grounded: FAA Reports Telephone System Failure

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently implemented a ground stop at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field due to a telephone outage affecting flight operations. This halt impacted both departing and incoming flights across the airports.

According to the FAA’s statement, they were dealing with a local telephone company’s equipment issue, not related to their own systems. They were collaborating with the provider to find a solution. Initially, they estimated the ground stop would last until 5 p.m., with a 30% to 60% chance of an extension. Ground stops mean that flights can’t take off for their destinations until the stop is lifted.

By 4 p.m., the situation improved at Love Field, shifting from a full stop to a delay, resulting in an average wait of about 28 minutes. Meanwhile, DFW Airport also saw ground delays with an average wait of 68 minutes. As of that time, there were reported delays of 626 flights and 172 cancellations at DFW, while Love Field had 158 delays and one cancellation.

American Airlines noted that the issue stemmed from the telecommunications provider for the air traffic control facility in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Due to this, the FAA had to limit flights significantly, impacting American Airlines’ operations. The airline offered a travel alert to allow affected customers to rebook without incurring change fees.

Interestingly, Love Field is mainly served by Southwest Airlines, operating out of 18 of its 20 gates, while DFW serves as a major hub for American Airlines.
