Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Nepal, Md Shafiqur Rahman, emphasized the importance of regional teamwork to tackle climate change during the International Climate Camp 2025. This event, held at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, gathered experts and key figures from both Bangladesh and Nepal.
Ambassador Rahman pointed out the severe effects of climate change in South Asia and stressed the need for collective action. He encouraged countries in the region to share knowledge and collaborate on initiatives like hydro-power and clean energy. This kind of cooperation could help both countries adapt to changing climates and mitigate negative impacts.
Prominent climate expert Prof. Dr. Ainun Nishat, along with representatives from various organizations such as UNDP, WaterAid Nepal, and ICIMOD, contributed to meaningful discussions at the camp. The ambassador conveyed Bangladesh’s eagerness to work alongside Nepal and other nations in addressing these pressing climate issues.
The event also aimed to inspire young participants to take on a leadership role, advocating for climate action and promoting collaborative solutions across communities. The camp, running from July 4-8, has engaged over 100 participants, including young scholars and climate professionals, to brainstorm policies that enhance climate resilience in the region.
Interestingly, according to a recent survey by the United Nations Development Programme, nearly 70% of South Asian youth believe that climate change will significantly impact their futures. This highlights the urgency of discussions like those at the Climate Camp.
As we look ahead, shared responsibilities and innovative solutions will be crucial for South Asian nations facing the ongoing climate crisis. By working together, these countries can develop effective strategies that not only protect the environment but also promote sustainable growth for future generations.
