SHELLEY — Recently, I took a tasty trip back to Mick’s Home Cooking in Shelley. This diner has been a beloved spot for locals for over 40 years, serving up classic diner fare and delightful pies. While it might not be widely known outside of Shelley, it surely deserves a spot on everyone’s food radar.
After visiting more than a decade ago, I was eager to see if Mick’s was still as good as I remembered. Spoiler: It exceeded my expectations.
During my visit, Diane Mickelsen, who co-owns the restaurant with her husband, introduced me to some standout dishes. First up was the “Super Burger,” a monster sandwich featuring two beef patties, ham, and bacon, all nestled in house-made buns. Honestly, it was so good that I nearly wolfed it down before the cameras were packed up!
Alongside the burger, I sampled their Country Fried Steak breakfast. This hearty meal included two fried eggs, homemade hash browns, and a generous drizzle of sausage gravy. The hash browns are made from locally sourced potatoes, true to the restaurant’s roots in Shelley, known for its russet potatoes.
The highlight of my meal was undeniably the Raspberry Pie Milkshake. It’s simply a slice of pie blended into vanilla ice cream, but it’s pure magic. Many folks rave about Mick’s pies, and now I see why—this shake is a must-try and a playful twist on a classic pairing.
Diane also shared their “Farmer’s Breakfast Sandwich,” which combines all the breakfast essentials into a satisfying sandwich. Even our videographer, a self-proclaimed breakfast sandwich expert, couldn’t resist singing its praises.
Mick’s Home Cooking is open for breakfast and lunch, but be sure to plan your visit because they’re closed on Sundays and Mondays. If you find yourself in Shelley, don’t miss out on this gem located at 398 South State Street. It’s easy to overlook, especially if you’re driving the old highway between Shelley and Blackfoot, but it’s well worth the stop.
According to a recent survey by the National Restaurant Association, diners increasingly seek out local favorites, which makes small spots like Mick’s essential for community charm. So, while big chains may dominate the market, places with deep local roots, like Mick’s, are what keep the heart of a community alive.
For those who cherish homemade meals and friendly service, Mick’s is proof that some of the best dining experiences can be found in cozy, unassuming diners. You can explore more about the importance of local dining in today’s changed food landscape here.
