Looking for a unique dining experience? Anacacho Coffee & Cantina, located in the historic St. Anthony Hotel in downtown San Antonio, is worth a visit. The vibe here is casual and inviting, offering tasty bites that make for a cozy meal.

Opened in 1909, the St. Anthony Hotel has seen better days but is now undergoing a revival. After renovations starting in 2012, the hotel is back in the spotlight, and the launch of Anacacho is a significant part of this transformation.

Chef Leo Davila, formerly of the highly praised Stixs & Stone, leads the kitchen. Anacacho is just the beginning. A new flagship restaurant is also in the works to replace the old Rebelle, adding excitement to the hotel’s dining options.

The bar boasts a remarkable selection of 21 Texas whiskies, making it a great spot for whiskey lovers. Our favorite pick was the Still Austin Bourbon in a classic Old Fashioned. It strikes a perfect balance with house bitters and Demerara sugar syrup. However, not every drink hit the mark; some versions left us wanting more. For example, Edna’s Whisper, with its curious mix of Cognac and marigold, didn’t quite impress.

The breakfast menu is enticing too, showcasing treats like brioche French toast and a lavish breakfast platter. After 11 a.m., the bar menu opens up with smaller plates and signature dishes.

Some standout items include the Mexican street corn, which comes perfectly charred and bursting with flavor. On the other hand, the Charred Shrimp Aguachile was less impressive due to an overzealous charring that muted the shrimp’s natural sweetness. Meanwhile, the bao bun flight, featuring variations like pork belly and fried chicken, was a hit, bringing back the bao’s deserved popularity.

The mini tostadas topped with homemade chorizo were a delight, showcasing crispy, fresh tortillas that made each bite irresistible. Desserts are currently only available through the bar’s after-dinner drinks, but we hope to see sweet treats added soon as chef Davila expands his menu. This might include innovative cocktails that could elevate the whole dining experience.

With its focus on approachable yet refined food, Anacacho Coffee & Cantina is setting a promising tone for the future of dining at the St. Anthony Hotel. Whether you’re looking to catch up with friends over drinks or enjoy a cozy meal, this spot is making its mark.
