Discover Earth’s Hidden ‘New’ Quasi-Moon: A Celestial Secret Unveiled After 60 Years!

Scientists have recently uncovered a fascinating hidden gem in space: a quasi-moon known as 2025 PN7. This intriguing object has been orbiting the Sun alongside Earth for decades, yet it went unnoticed until now. It’s likely to continue on this path for several more years.

The detection came from the Pan-STARRS observatory in Hawaii on August 2, as detailed in a study published in the Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society. This discovery led scientists to dive into old data, and they found images of 2025 PN7 dating back to 2014. Surprisingly, this space rock has been in a stable orbit for around 60 years and is expected to remain in this pattern for another 60 before it shifts away.

So, what exactly is 2025 PN7? It measures about 62 feet (19 meters) across and shines brightly between 2.8 million miles and 37.2 million miles from Earth, mainly visible in the Southern Hemisphere’s constellation Piscis Austrinus. This asteroid sits among a select group of near-Earth objects.

Now, you might be wondering what a quasi-moon is. Unlike our well-known Moon, which is permanently locked in Earth’s orbit, quasi-moons like 2025 PN7 don’t orbit our planet. Instead, they travel alongside Earth as both rotate around the Sun. They’re more like companions rather than actual moons.

It’s essential to distinguish quasi-moons from mini-moons. Mini-moons are captured temporarily by Earth’s gravity for a short time—weeks to months—before drifting away. For example, last year, a small asteroid became Earth’s mini-moon for two thrilling months. Interestingly, mini-moons may occur more frequently than quasi-moons.

One of the most well-known quasi-moons is Kamoʻoalewa, also termed 2016 HO3. Discovered on April 27, 2016, Kamoʻoalewa is much larger, measuring between 131 and 328 feet (40 to 100 meters). Significantly, China’s Tianwen-2 mission, launched in May, aims to study Kamoʻoalewa and bring back samples in 2027, unlocking secrets about our solar system’s origins.
