Rising Food Prices Hit Families Hard
In Pensacola, families are feeling the squeeze at grocery stores and restaurants. Food prices have shot up lately, with inflation reaching 3.8% compared to last year.
John Huggins, the executive chef at Fish House, shared his frustrations. “Tomatoes are outrageous. What used to cost me half is now close to $90 for a case,” he said. According to recent government data, food prices are soaring, with groceries experiencing their highest inflation rates in 2023.
Local restaurants are also feeling the pinch. Huggins noted that the cost of grouper has jumped by 24%, and chicken is 5% pricier. “It’s tough for restaurants to pass these costs onto customers,” he explained. “People may not be able to afford dining out, so we have to manage our costs carefully.”
The price hikes are partly due to soaring diesel prices. These rising costs affect everything from fishing boats to delivery trucks. “Vendors are adding extra fees, and that impacts what we pay to get goods,” Huggins said.
At the same time, many families are struggling to make ends meet. Kerri Smayda of Manna Food Pantries noted, “We’re seeing a record number of people coming for help—many who’ve never needed assistance before.” This increase in demand has also affected donations; their recent food drive collected 20,000 pounds less than usual. Smayda explained, “With food prices so high, people have less to give.”
Moreover, Manna Food Pantries faces rising costs themselves, with bulk food orders increasing by as much as 5%. So, what does the future hold? Experts suggest food prices may keep fluctuating, adding to the uncertainty for families and organizations alike.
On a brighter note, there will be a food distribution event in Pensacola this weekend. State Representative Michelle Salzman is teaming up with Feeding the Gulf Coast and local partners. The event will provide 30,000 pounds of food to 300 families, with each household receiving a box of fresh produce.
