At a press conference in Tokyo, the 20-year-old expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I hope to work so that we can lead a sustainable and bright future.” She aims to raise awareness about climate change and inspire collective efforts to tackle this pressing issue.

Ashida emphasized the importance of learning from others around the world who are addressing climate challenges. “By sharing messages and ideas, we can create efforts that cross borders and generations,” she explained.

This role aligns with the U.N.’s mission to combat various global issues, including poverty and social inequality. Ashida’s passion for the environment brings a fresh perspective to these efforts.

Misako Konno, a seasoned actress and the UNDP’s global goodwill ambassador since 1998, was also present at the conference. As she prepares to step down from her role, she shared her heartfelt reaction to Ashida’s appointment. Konno revealed that Ashida wrote her a handwritten letter before taking on this new role, which moved her to tears. “It makes me proud to see someone so young taking on such responsibility,” Konno said.

Ashida’s commitment to environmental issues signals a new wave of activism in Japan, inspiring others to join the conversation and contribute to creating a more sustainable future.
