Discover How ‘Xue Long 2’ is Pioneering Thai-Chinese Collaboration in Polar Research and Climate Change Solutions!

On May 22, 2025, Chulalongkorn University hosted a significant conference called “Xue Long 2 and Beyond: Advancing Polar Research and Thailand–China Cooperation in a Changing Climate.” This event celebrated two milestones: the 70th birthday of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and 50 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China.

The conference was organized by the Polar Science Consortium of Thailand and the Polar Research Institute of China. It brought together top scientists from both countries to discuss important topics like polar research, climate change, and marine ecosystems. A key goal was to engage young people in these scientific conversations.

Maria Poonlertlarp, a well-known environmental advocate and former Miss Universe Thailand, also participated. She emphasized the power of youth in driving change and raising awareness about climate issues.

One of the most exciting moments came with updates from the icebreaker “Xue Long 2.” This vessel had just returned from an Antarctic research mission, revealing important data about ocean health and climate indicators. These findings are crucial, especially for tropical nations like Thailand, as they highlight risks like rising sea levels and shifts in marine biodiversity.

Recent studies show that climate change is not just a polar issue. According to the World Meteorological Organization, 2022 saw record-high temperatures in many regions, indicating a global crisis. This underscores the need for strong international collaboration on climate research and action.

Overall, this conference was a platform for inspiring conversations and solidifying partnerships that may lead to future advancements in climate science. It showed us that by bridging geographical divides, we can tackle climate challenges together.
