Katsina State Shines in Climate Governance
Katsina State has recently earned a second-place ranking in the 2025 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Rating. This is a significant recognition of its commitment to sustainable growth.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda views this ranking as proof of the state’s proactive governance and dedication to environmental responsibility. “It shows how good data and collaboration can improve public service,” he noted.
Prof. Mohammed Al-Amin, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Climate Change, echoed this sentiment. He believes the ranking proves that Katsina’s climate reforms are making a real difference. “Second place among all Nigerian states is a clear sign our efforts are paying off,” he said.
The ranking emphasizes practical climate governance, focusing not only on creating policies but also on executing them transparently. Prof. Al-Amin pointed out that their reforms deliver measurable results for everyday people.
Katsina’s notable rise in the ranking, jumping 23 spots from last year, indicates significant improvement in areas like administrative capacity and accountability. Here are some key achievements:
- Institutional Strengthening: Establishment of climate governance desks across various ministries.
- Policy Implementation: The introduction of the Katsina State Climate Resilience and Green Economy Policy in 2024.
- Increased Funding: A 30% boost in financial support for climate-related initiatives in 2025.
- Citizen Engagement: Launching Katsina Climate Watch, a digital platform promoting transparency and public involvement in climate projects.
This assessment was created by Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke and the Society for Planet and Prosperity, with support from various organizations, including the UK’s FCDO and the African Climate Foundation.
The Federal Minister of Environment, Hon. Balarabe Abbas, praised the top-performing states. He encouraged others to learn from the Climate Governance Ranking framework, seeing it as a guide for better governance.
Research shows that states embracing data-driven assessments can enhance governance and effectively address climate issues. With climate change affecting everyone, innovations in governance can lead to real improvements in citizens’ lives.
As Katsina sets an example, it highlights the importance of focused actions and community engagement in tackling environmental challenges.
