You can find Instants in your direct message (DM) inbox. Just look for a new icon at the bottom-right corner. Once you share a photo, your friends can react with emojis or reply, but here’s the catch: those photos vanish after they’ve been viewed. Plus, they disappear completely after 24 hours and can’t be screenshot or recorded.
However, there’s a silver lining. You can keep your Instants in an archive for up to a year. This way, if you want to recall a moment, you can easily reshare it to your Instagram Stories. If you change your mind right after posting, there’s an option to undo the share or remove it from your archive.
Instagram also launched a separate Instants mobile app, initially in Italy and Spain. This app gives users immediate camera access and links directly to your Instagram account. The aim is to see how users engage with this feature and adapt based on feedback.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, notes that Instants encourage people to share more genuine, everyday moments. He highlighted that many users aren’t as keen on posting to their main profiles anymore. Instead, they seem to prefer a more relaxed and authentic way of sharing experiences.
According to a recent survey conducted by Pew Research Center, 72% of teens feel that platforms like Instagram are shifting more towards casual, spur-of-the-moment sharing. This change reflects a broader trend in social media where users favor authenticity over perfection.
