Instagram is currently testing a new image-sharing app called Instants, which is now available in Spain and Italy. This app allows users to share photos that disappear after being viewed once, or after 24 hours.
With Instants, snapping a photo is effortless—just one tap, and there’s no editing allowed. Users can’t upload images from their camera roll; everything is captured through the app itself. You can add some text, but that’s about it.
Unlike Instagram, which showcases polished images, Instants is all about quick, real-life moments. It draws inspiration from platforms like Snapchat, BeReal, and Locket, emphasizing authentic, fleeting content.
Interestingly, Instagram has been testing similar features within its main app for a while now. A company spokesperson explained, “We’re exploring multiple versions of Instants to see what people like and will listen to our community.” Users can share these “instants” with their mutual followers or a specific Close Friends list, which remains consistent across both apps.
This move might be Instagram’s attempt to return to its roots. Originally, it was a platform for friends to share personal moments. Over time, it became more commercial, filled with ads and influencers. The rise of apps like BeReal, which advocates for unfiltered sharing, highlights a growing desire for low-pressure content among users.
As of now, many people utilize Instagram Stories for quick snapshots. So, will they embrace a separate app meant for ephemeral sharing?
