Discover OpenAI’s GPT-4.5: Exciting Features Revealed, But Here’s Why It’s Not a Frontier AI Model

OpenAI is rolling out GPT-4.5 today. It’s their largest model yet, but not classified as a frontier model. This means it might not have the same performance as earlier models like o1 or o3-mini.

With GPT-4.5, users can expect better writing skills and more accurate information. It also boasts an improved personality compared to earlier versions. However, it doesn’t introduce enough new features to be seen as groundbreaking. According to OpenAI, it enhances computational efficiency by over 10 times but still falls short in some evaluations compared to older models.

Reports mention that OpenAI trained GPT-4.5 using a mix of new and traditional methods, including supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning from human feedback. This approach is similar to the one used for GPT-4o, which is known for its reasoning abilities.

Despite a few shortcomings, GPT-4.5 is said to produce fewer inaccuracies than GPT-4o and slightly fewer than the o1 model. There are indications that access to GPT-4.5 might be exclusive to ChatGPT Pro users, similar to how previous models were made available.

Last week, I mentioned that OpenAI planned to unveil GPT-4.5 by the end of February and is eyeing a GPT-5 launch as early as late May. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, has teased GPT-5 as a system that brings together various technologies and will feature the new o3 reasoning model.

While OpenAI introduced o3-mini recently, the full o3 model will be included only in the upcoming GPT-5. This is part of OpenAI’s ambition to merge its language models into a more complex system, potentially leading toward artificial general intelligence, or AGI.
