Jagex is set to unveil a fresh chapter in the RuneScape universe with a new game called RuneScape: Dragonwilds. This game takes the beloved MMORPG into the realm of survival. Launching in early access this spring, it promises an exciting cooperative experience for players.

In Dragonwilds, players will explore Ashenfall, a previously unseen continent in the RuneScape world. Here, groups of one to four players work together to acquire skills, establish camps, and face fierce opponents, including many dragons. Ashenfall is divided into two distinct regions featuring five unique biomes, with the potential for more to be added later.
Although this new land isn’t the main continent players are used to, it offers familiar vibes. Players may recognize various locations inspired by classic RuneScape spots, like a wizard’s tower or an iconic castle. The monsters have also had a makeover. Expect to see familiar creatures, but they come with a twist—thanks to the area’s wild magic, creatures have changed into new, nature-infused versions.
A key aspect of survival in Dragonwilds is skill development. Players can engage in classic RuneScape activities like cooking and woodcutting. Recently revealed at the Game Developers’ Conference, gameplay clips showcased innovative mechanics. For instance, players can harness wind runes to glide over distances. A nostalgic feature allows users to line up trees and use an “ax-tral projection” skill to chop them down simultaneously.
As excitement builds, Dragonwilds aims for a wider release on consoles by 2026, after its initial PC launch. For those eager to learn more, Jagex plans to provide an in-depth look at the game on Twitch on April 15 at 9:00 AM PT.
The shift towards survival games is part of a larger trend in the gaming industry, where players increasingly seek cooperative and immersive experiences. According to a recent report from Newzoo, over 50% of gamers prefer multiplayer experiences, reflecting a growing demand for games that foster teamwork and community.
This anticipation mirrors past expansions in franchises like Minecraft, where survival elements revitalized player interest. With its unique blend of nostalgia and innovation, Dragonwilds could attract both long-time fans and newcomers.
