Slate Auto, a company partly funded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, is launching an affordable electric truck that can transform into an SUV. Its starting price is $20,000 after federal incentives, aimed at making electric vehicles more accessible.

The truck is smaller than other popular models, measuring about two-thirds the size of a Chevy Silverado EV. Despite its compact design, it boasts a 1,400-pound payload capacity, which is slightly less than the Ford Maverick. In terms of size, it’s comparable to a 1985 Toyota pickup, making it easy to navigate in urban settings.

Slate’s approach stands out in the market as it focuses on simplicity. Unlike flashy models like Tesla’s, the Slate truck is designed to be practical with essential features only. It does not come equipped with power windows or a touchscreen, emphasizing a back-to-basics philosophy that some consumers may find refreshing. TechCrunch refers to it as an “anti-Tesla,” catering to those who prefer functionality over extravagant tech.

The vehicle has an impressive maximum range of 150 miles on a single charge, with an option for a battery pack that can extend this to 240 miles. This makes it suitable for daily commutes and short trips. The design and engineering teams are based in California and Michigan, with assembly happening in Indiana.

Investors, including Bezos and Mark Walter (owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers), have backed Slate Auto with $111 million. This significant investment highlights the growing interest in the electric vehicle market, which is expected to reach a valuation of $800 billion by 2027, according to a recent report by Allied Market Research. As consumer preferences shift towards sustainable options, vehicles like Slate’s could play a key role in this transition.

However, customers will have to wait until late 2026 for delivery, though a refundable reservation fee of $50 allows early interest. As the demand for electric vehicles grows, innovations like Slate’s approach may attract those looking for budget-friendly and versatile options.
