As autumn arrives and the weather turns cooler, nothing satisfies like a warm, comforting meal. Located near Colonial Williamsburg’s Merchants Square, Jewish Mother’s Delicatessen aims to serve food that feels familiar, providing comfort even to visitors trying it for the first time.
In just a few short weeks since opening, this deli has quickly become popular among students at the College of William and Mary.
On a chilly Thursday, my friend and I chose Jewish Mother’s Deli over the dining hall. As soon as we entered, we were enveloped by a warm, inviting atmosphere that felt both cozy and modern.
The space may be small, but it’s packed with charm. The moment I stepped inside, the aroma of fresh bagels welcomed us. I instantly noticed the pastry case filled with mouth-watering treats, and seven baskets of bagels lined the wall behind the counter.
The chalkboard menu was impressive, filled with countless delicious options. It took me longer than expected to make my choice.
Ultimately, I ordered a hot pastrami sandwich and a cup of Matzah ball soup. My friend opted for the deli breakfast sandwich and also chose the soup.
As we waited for our food, I watched the small, open kitchen next to the counter. Every meal is made to order, highlighting the personal touch that sets this deli apart.
While there, I chatted with manager Samantha Triano. She shared, “We’ve noticed many local families coming in. We want it to feel like home, where they can enjoy their mom’s favorite dishes.”
Owner Sid Hall is well-versed in the restaurant business. He also runs Waypoint Seafood and Grill and other local spots. Hall, who grew up in Williamsburg but has roots in New York City, dreamed of opening a deli to share comforting, traditional foods. You can sense his passion for the memories tied to this kind of cuisine.
Once our meals arrived, I dove into my pastrami sandwich. It was everything I hoped for—simple yet satisfying, with just mustard and pastrami on toasted rye. It truly felt like a warm hug on a cold day.
The Matzah ball soup was equally delightful. It was hearty and nutritious, loaded with two large dumplings, carrots, onions, celery, and noodles—perfect for warming up.
My friend loved her breakfast sandwich, made with a fresh bagel, a runny egg, cheese, and her choice of meat. It’s interesting to note that the bagels come from Brooklyn, New York, adding authenticity to the deli’s offerings.
As a college student, I’m excited to have a new spot for quality comfort food. Triano expressed that she hopes to create a place students can rely on, just as she did in her own college days.
Later, I spoke with Kyra Taube, a student who shared her experience at the deli. “I love finding places outside the dining hall, and coming from a Jewish family, this food feels like home,” she said.
I’m already planning a return visit to try one of their famous bagel sandwiches and perhaps a slice of their chocolate cake.
Jewish Mother’s Deli is a fantastic addition to Williamsburg. Its inviting atmosphere, simple yet distinct menu, and focus on quality make it a gem. If you’re after comforting food in a cozy setting, this deli is worth a visit—you won’t regret it!
