MESA, AZ — Driving down Dobson Road between Main and Broadway, you’ll notice a vibrant scene filled with Asian businesses and restaurants, marked by colorful signs declaring “Mesa Asian District.” This area is the cultural heart of west Mesa, showcasing a rich blend of Asian traditions.
The Mesa Asian District emerged from a redevelopment effort by the City of Mesa Office of Economic Development, which started in 2018. Angie Herrera, Marketing Specialist from the city, mentions that the area’s population is diverse, with multiple Asian ethnicities contributing to an engaging community. People from across Arizona visit at least once a month, drawn by its unique offerings.
To highlight this diversity, the city developed a logo featuring a tangram, a traditional geometric puzzle known for representing unity among different cultures. Herrera states, “It’s a point of pride for Mesa. We focused on diversity and creating a welcoming space for businesses and shoppers alike.”
The project gained momentum in 2020. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the city successfully installed new signage and promoted the district. This included renaming the nearby light rail stop to “Asian District” to further enhance visibility.
Today, the district boasts over 100 businesses, including restaurants offering cuisine from Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Taiwanese cultures, alongside grocery stores like MeKong Plaza and H-Mart. These establishments not only provide food but also foster a sense of home for many, a sentiment echoed by community members. “It reminds them of home,” Herrera explains, noting that many express nostalgia for the familiar smells and languages present in the area.
The district has garnered attention beyond Mesa. Cities like Detroit have inquired about creating similar cultural hubs. Unlike Chinatowns found in many large cities, Mesa’s approach embraces a variety of Asian cultures all in one vibrant location.
The Mesa Asian District also hosts events such as the Lunar New Year and spring festivals, allowing local businesses to showcase their products while celebrating cultural heritage. These gatherings not only foster community spirit but also help visitors learn about the diverse cultures represented in the district.

As cities increasingly focus on diversity and inclusion, the Mesa Asian District stands as a successful model that brings together various cultures, creating a dynamic space for commerce and community.
