Legit Dogs & Ice has found a new home in South Elgin, and it’s all about fun and flavor. This vibrant spot is owned by husband and wife duo, Jennifer Polit and Matthew Habib. They started with a food truck back in 2016 and later shifted to a restaurant in downtown Elgin. After a few ups and downs, they’ve returned to their roots with a fresh take.
Matthew describes the restaurant’s vibe as “punk rock, street food, and video games.” He wanted the place to embody joy and creativity. The location showcases stunning graffiti, adding to the artistic feel of the restaurant.
Inside, you’ll find bright murals from local artists. The space features a mix of casual dining and live performances, thanks to an elevated stage. What sets this place apart is the eight classic video game stations where you can play for free, along with several fun pinball machines.
But what about the food? The menu is not your ordinary hot dog and burger fare. The offerings include artisan hot dogs made with locally sourced ingredients. The Max n’ Cheese dog is a standout, piled high with homemade mac and cheese, bacon, and more. It’s a dish you might need a fork to tackle, but it’s worth every bite.
The Bad Hombre dog comes with a spicy twist, featuring jalapeños, mango, and a creamy sauce. Polit encourages diners to step out of their comfort zone. If someone orders a plain hot dog, be prepared for some playful banter to try something more adventurous.
The burgers are also worth mentioning, made with double Angus patties on brioche buns. Each one has its unique flair, with toppings like grilled jalapeños and spicy sauces that reflect the eatery’s bold philosophy.

Chef Matthew feels excited about the menu, claiming he wouldn’t change a thing about it.
