In the U.S., we have our favorite regional foods. Personally, I lean towards Carolina-style whole hog barbecue, though I wouldn’t say no to Texas brisket or Kansas City burnt ends. But when it comes to Mexican food, we sometimes put everything from the country into the same category.
Mexican cuisine is rich and diverse. It includes so much more than just tamales and chilaquiles. For instance, Oaxaca is famous for its seven moles, while Baja California delights with Ensenada-style fish tacos. Then there’s Sonora, near Arizona and New Mexico, known for its cattle ranches and tasty grilled dishes, featuring thin flour tortillas. Excitingly, San Diego will soon get a taste of this Sonoran culture when TacoNora opens on March 7 in Pacific Beach.
Renata Vázquez, the founder of TacoNora, shared that this family-owned spot marks their first location in the U.S. They’ve already set their sights on expanding across North County and into Arizona. According to Vázquez, Pacific Beach was perfect for their grill-forward fast-casual dining concept.
At TacoNora, diners can choose their protein from options like asada, pork belly, or grilled Anaheim chiles. Customers can then select how they want their meal, whether it’s a taco, a crunchy open-faced lorenza, or a Sonoran-style burrito. Each option highlights the tortilla and grill while keeping the meat as the star.
The restaurant will also serve house-made guacamole, beans slow-cooked with pork fat, and a salsa bar with ten different options. Vázquez emphasizes a simple yet customizable dining experience. “Sonoran food deserves a voice in San Diego,” she says.
TacoNora opens at 956 Garnet Avenue on March 7.
In other San Diego news, Tip Top Meats, a beloved European deli, has reopened at 6118 Paseo Del Norte. After closing in 2024, they’re back and ready to serve. With decades of experience, the team aims to reclaim their spot as a local go-to. They’re open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
Additionally, notable events are happening in the city. The Library at Fairmont Grand Del Mar is hosting a guided tasting of premium Irish whiskeys on March 10. It’s a great opportunity for whiskey fans to explore the complexities of this classic spirit.
Then, there’s a special Chef Series dinner at Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa on March 19, featuring chef Roberto Alcocer from the Michelin-starred Valle restaurant. Guests can enjoy a four-course meal paired with beautifully crafted cocktails.
Finally, Liberty Public Market will celebrate its 10th anniversary on March 21-22, offering live music, food specials, and more. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, it’s a great chance to experience what the market has to offer.
