There was once a Mediterranean spot called Phoenicia, right across from Southeast Missouri Towers on Sprigg Street. It became my go-to place from the early 2000s to the early 2010s. For a while, Zoi’s Gyro Corner on Broadway hit the spot with their fresh gyro meat, but they’ve shut down too. Now, I enjoy the gyros at Olive’s Pitaria, where the meat is seasoned with care. But they only open three days a week, which isn’t always convenient for my busy schedule. Sometimes, I need something quick and accessible, maybe even a fast-food gyro.
It’s tough to compare a fast-food gyro to a small business like Olive’s, so I decided to give two fast-food options a fair shot. I bought gyros from Arby’s and another chain and tried them side by side.
First, I visited Arby’s. They offer a Greek Gyro, along with choices like Roast Beef and Chicken. I focused on the Greek version. It comes with warm pita, lettuce, red onion, tomato, and a sauce that reminded me of tzatziki.
What stood out at Arby’s? It was budget-friendly, costing over $4 less than my second option. The pita was soft and held up well with the meat and sauce. The tomatoes had a sprinkle of seasoning, which added a nice touch. Plus, Arby’s has curly fries that are great with their Horsey Sauce—a winning combo! And I can’t forget their cherry turnovers; they are a sweet ending worth trying.
In today’s fast-paced world, quick dining options are vital. According to a recent survey by QSR Magazine, nearly 60% of consumers prioritize convenience when dining out, especially during busy weekdays. With trends leaning towards fast-casual dining, there’s potential for fast-food chains to elevate their offerings while staying quick.
While fast food can never match the charm and flavors of a local gem like Olive’s, they provide a reliable alternative when you’re craving a gyro on the go. Whether you’re a fan of classic spots or just need something quick, it’s all about what tickles your taste buds.
