CHICO, Calif. — As the federal government shutdown continues, the North State Food Bank in Chico is gearing up for a spike in demand for food assistance. Many Californians are facing delays in their CalFresh benefits, which is already impacting those in need.
Governor Gavin Newsom is taking action by mobilizing the California National Guard and California Volunteers to support food banks. He’s also fast-tracking $80 million in funding through CalFood. However, this funding is limited to California-grown products, which poses a challenge since the state is moving out of its peak growing season.
Tim Hawkins, CEO of the Community Action Agency of Butte County, stresses the importance of community support. “When federal systems falter, local communities need to step up,” he said. He noted that while the CalFood funding will help, it doesn’t allow for the purchase of all necessary food items. Financial donations are essential for acquiring other staples like proteins and grains that families in need require.
About 40,000 people in Butte County are expected to experience delays in their November CalFresh benefits. Although the October benefits are not affected, many federal employees who are missing paychecks are also likely to turn to local food banks for help. Currently, the North State Food Bank serves around 15,000 residents each month across five counties, and this number is projected to rise.
Historically, food banks have seen increased demand during government shutdowns. A recent survey indicated that nearly one in five Americans faced food insecurity during previous shutdowns. Community donations during such times can make a significant difference in addressing local needs.
If you’re looking to support the North State Food Bank, consider donating or volunteering your time. A $25 donation can supply up to 25 meals for families struggling to get by. You can contribute securely online through the Community Action Agency’s Donation Page.
Every bit helps in ensuring that no one in Butte County goes hungry, especially during these challenging times.
