The Abellon Waste to Energy (WTE) Campus in Jamnagar, Gujarat, is a groundbreaking project making strides in waste management and energy production. This facility is India’s first platinum-rated net-zero green WTE campus, as recognized by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). It symbolizes an innovative approach to tackling waste and environmental issues in the country.

India generates a staggering 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) annually. Unfortunately, only 69% is collected, with a mere 28% treated. This often results in landfills and pollution. The Abellon Campus aims to address this crisis. Their goal is to process 50-100% of city waste using advanced combustion technology, ensuring minimal odor and harmful emissions. This complies with both the Indian government’s MSW rules and European emission standards.

The facility occupies 7,825 square meters and transforms 220,000 tons of MSW per year into 7.5 MW of clean energy—enough to power around 15,000 homes. It also revitalizes a 17-acre barren area into a green space that includes jogging tracks and community areas. The design minimizes human interaction during operations, enhancing efficiency and safety.

Experts have praised this venture. Dr. Sunita Narain, a prominent environmentalist, highlighted the importance of such projects, stating, “Innovative waste management can significantly reduce environmental pollution and contribute to clean energy solutions.”

Moreover, the campus emphasizes water conservation, using treated wastewater and an innovative misting system to cool the facility and improve the local microclimate. Over 40% of its landscape features drought-resistant plants, which helps reduce water consumption, a crucial factor given Gujarat’s climate.

The project also creates a circular economy by producing BioCNG from organic waste and recovering recyclable materials from the garbage. This multifaceted approach not only addresses waste but also contributes to community upliftment and local job creation.

The tremendous impact of the Abellon Campus hasn’t gone unnoticed. It has won several awards, including recognition from the BIG 5 Global Impact Awards for its carbon net-zero initiative and other accolades for excellence in architecture and green building design.
