Get ready for a night of laughter and reflection with “Parents in Chains,” a new comedy making its world premiere at the New Vic Theatre in Santa Barbara. The show runs from March 12 to March 30 and is directed by Andy Fickman, featuring the talented Sharon Lawrence.

Written by Jay Martel, this play brings to life the text exchanges of six Los Angeles parents. They are waiting for their 17-year-old daughters to return from a weekend trip to San Francisco while a hurricane looms on the horizon.

As the storm approaches, the interplay among the parents reveals the challenges and joys of letting go. The characters navigate their fears and hopes, shedding light on the rollercoaster of parenting.

Scott DeVine, the executive artistic director of Ensemble Theatre Company, describes “Parents in Chains” as a fresh and unforgettable look at family life. He praises its sharp dialogue and innovative use of text messaging, which adds a modern twist to storytelling on stage.

“This production truly reflects our mission to explore the human spirit through bold and imaginative works,” DeVine adds. He expresses excitement about sharing this unique experience with the Santa Barbara community.

Showtimes are as follows: 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, 8 p.m. on Fridays, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays. There are also two extra shows at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, March 18 and March 25.

Sharon Lawrence, known for her powerful performances, has been seen in various notable roles. Recently, she starred in the Paramount+ series “Joe Pickett” and had significant parts in “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” and “Home Before Dark.” She has also appeared in “Rebel,” “Criminal Minds,” “The Ranch,” and “Queen Sugar.”

Lawrence’s remarkable talent has earned her multiple Emmy nominations and a SAG Award for her role in “NYPD Blue.” She was also recognized for her performance in “Grey’s Anatomy,” earning an Emmy nod for her work.
