Chef Chris Murray has returned to Marshall High School, teaming up with students to create a traditional Slovenian meal. As a corporate chef for Taher, Murray travels globally, immersing himself in various culinary traditions. Returning home, he loves to share these experiences with students.

“I aim for happy, smiling kids who are eager to learn,” he said. For this visit, he is preparing a scrumptious dish inspired by his adventures in Slovenia last summer. The menu includes Ljubljana pork and sausage skewers, spinach pratta, and Slovenian dumplings.

Murray emphasizes the charm of Slovenian cooking, noting its focus on sustainability. “We visited farms and picked fresh herbs right from the wild. It was incredible to connect directly with nature,” he recalled. This hands-on approach not only enriches his culinary skills but also allows him to pass on valuable lessons to the young chefs in training.

The pork and sausage are served on small skewers, reminiscent of kabobs, adding a fun twist to the meal. Murray is also preparing a chicken option for those who prefer not to eat pork. His dishes aren’t just popular in Marshall; Murray shared a heartwarming story from Ohio where a fourth-grader, excited after a similar cooking session, rushed to the grocery store to make the meal for her family. “That’s the true reward for me,” he said.

On Tuesday morning, students eagerly participated in making the dumplings and rolling the pratta. “Pratta is a staple in Slovenian households. It’s versatile and can adapt based on leftovers. It can even be transformed into dessert!” Murray explained, highlighting one creative way to enjoy pratta with flavors like chocolate and mascarpone.

Sharing his culinary journey, Murray mentioned that he’s been with Taher for 23 years and has traveled to 45 countries, soon to hit 46 with a trip to China. His goal is to inspire students and foster excitement about different cuisines, and he often receives positive feedback, which motivates him to keep teaching.

Local reports show a growing interest in culinary education among high school students, reflecting a national trend where schools are putting more focus on practical life skills. Programs like these not only provide students with cooking skills but also foster a sense of cultural awareness and appreciation for global cuisines.

“The students here in Marshall are wonderful,” Murray said. “I’m fortunate to meet so many passionate people, and I love creating memorable experiences in the kitchen.”
