Elon Musk is known for making big promises, often involving grand plans that come with huge numbers. Recently, he introduced an ambitious idea for orbital data centers, featuring a network of solar-powered satellites. Musk aims to launch as many as one million satellites designed to provide immense computing power for artificial intelligence. He believes that, in a few years, this space-based computing will be cheaper than traditional data centers.
In a recent presentation, Musk revealed some impressive details about the satellites. A small version of these satellites will be much larger than SpaceX’s own Starship rocket, the tallest rocket ever at 408 feet. These satellites may also exceed the International Space Station’s length of 358 feet, mainly due to their large solar panels that will generate enough energy for 100 kilowatts of computing.
While specific measurements weren’t given, the ambitious scale has raised eyebrows. As astronomy experts have noted, this could pose a serious threat to space observation. Samantha Lawler, an astronomer from the University of Regina, expressed concern that the size of these satellites might impact our ability to study the cosmos. She pointed out that their initial estimates might have actually been too conservative.
The logistics behind this plan are equally staggering. To support these satellites, Musk announced a new chip manufacturing facility called “Terafab.” This plant is expected to cost $20 billion and could produce up to 200 billion advanced chips every year. Musk insists that without this facility, they won’t have the chips needed for their projects.
In a twist, Musk also mentioned that millions of Tesla’s Optimus robots would be involved in maintaining this factory. He claims that the production of these robots will be enabled by the chips from Terafab.
Estimates indicate that launching one million satellites could cost over a trillion dollars—an amount comparable to SpaceX’s valuation ahead of its planned IPO. The scale of these financial commitments raises questions about the feasibility of Musk’s grand vision and what it means for our future.
