A recent discovery in western Portugal is changing how scientists view crocodile evolution. Researchers uncovered crocodilian eggs that are an astonishing 152 million years old at a dinosaur nesting site in Lourinhã. This find pushes back the fossil record for these eggs by about 40 million years, making them the oldest known crocodilian eggs ever found, according to a study in PLOS ONE.

Crocodilians first appeared around 200 million years ago, coexisting with early dinosaurs. João Russo, a paleontologist from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, highlighted that ancient crocodile relatives were much more diverse than what we see today. They filled various ecological roles with differing diets and habitats.

These eggs date back to the Late Jurassic period. Russo emphasized that their age provides new insights into how early crocodiles reproduced. He noted, “These eggs being from the Late Jurassic makes them the oldest crocodilian eggs known so far.”

Researchers found multiple clutches of eggs over several excavation seasons, indicating repeated nesting in the area. This suggests a long-standing reproductive site, offering critical evidence of early crocodile behavior.

What’s particularly intriguing is how similar these ancient eggs are to those of modern crocodiles. Their almost identical shape and structure point to an evolutionary stability that has lasted over 150 million years, which is rare in the animal kingdom.
