MONTICELLO – The Leadership Sullivan Class of 2025 has launched a new initiative to combat food insecurity in Sullivan County. They’ve set up Little Free Food Pantries not just in Monticello, but also in Liberty, White Lake, Narrowsburg, and Glen Spey.

These pantries are accessible 24/7 in areas where food needs are high. They aim to make food easy to obtain while ensuring privacy for those who use them. This project works alongside local food providers and relies on community support, sponsorships, and volunteers.

Jen Jensen, the President of Leadership Sullivan, presented Dr. Peter Chester, the head of the Landfield Avenue Synagogue in Monticello, with a $200 gift card. This card will help maintain a kosher pantry placed at the synagogue. Dr. Chester expressed gratitude, noting that this support would significantly help families in need.

Kathy Kreiter, Director of the Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless, explained how food kiosks like these can bridge gaps in food access, especially since traditional food sources may not be available daily. “People are hungry every day,” she said, emphasizing the pantries’ importance.

According to a recent USDA report, 10.5% of U.S. households experienced food insecurity in 2021. Initiatives like these are crucial as local communities step up to meet this ongoing challenge. Leadership Sullivan not only develops future leaders but also nurtures a sense of responsibility toward community welfare.
