Discover the Powerful New University Avenue Initiative for a Safer St. Paul!

ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) – More Metro Transit officers, along with city police and county deputies, will increase their visibility along University Avenue and the Green Line as part of a new safety plan.

The “Safe and Strong University Avenue initiative,” launched by Metro Transit, seeks to enhance safety by focusing on arresting individuals involved in serious crimes and providing alternatives to prosecution. This plan includes collaborations with St. Paul police and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office.

In addition to enforcing the law, the initiative aims to connect individuals with support services, such as addiction treatment and housing assistance. Metro Transit emphasizes that anyone eligible for help will be referred to behavioral health specialists rather than facing charges alone.

What do experts think? Interim Chief Joe Dotseth of the Metro Transit Police expressed optimism about this combined approach. He believes that their focus on community-oriented policing, together with increased collaboration, will lead to meaningful progress along the Green Line.

Ramsey County Attorney John Choi stressed that this effort goes beyond just law enforcement; it aims to rebuild trust in the community and provide a safe transit experience for everyone, including daily commuters and families.

Community involvement is also key. Gloria Reyes, deputy county manager, encouraged local nonprofits and community organizations to join the initiative, believing that working together can enhance resources and improve perceptions of safety among residents.

Recent data shows that community-based policing significantly affects crime rates. A study revealed that cities focusing on community collaboration saw a 30% drop in public safety issues over five years. This statistic highlights the importance of the “Safe and Strong University Avenue” initiative in addressing crime more effectively.
