Discover the Visionary Couple Behind Liverpool’s Trendiest Lifestyle Store, Ranked Among the UK’s Most Stylish!

A charming lifestyle store in South Liverpool, A Slower Space, has earned a spot on The Sunday Times Style magazine’s list of the 50 coolest independent shops in the UK. Located on Penny Lane, the shop opened in 2019 thanks to a husband-and-wife duo, Mike and Michelle Waterfield.

Before starting their business, Mike and Michelle spent 16 years in the fashion industry. They took a year off to work in Hong Kong, where they re-evaluated their careers. The idea for A Slower Space came to them during their travels, blending their love for fashion, flowers, and coffee.

Mike shared, “We wanted a space where people felt welcome. You could come in, grab a coffee, and chat, even if you weren’t shopping.” Their goal was to create a friendly atmosphere for the local community.

A Slower Space offers a mix of products. They sell flowers, coffee, artwork, and home goods—catering to everyone from those seeking fancy gifts to people wanting a simple bouquet. The store has become a convenient one-stop shop for busy locals who appreciate thoughtful items without needing to trek into the city.

Over the years, they’ve expanded their offerings. They now have their own range of greeting cards and prints featuring Liverpool parks, which have gained popularity. This year, their park prints have not only been well received by customers but have also been featured in other independent shops.

The couple was thrilled when they learned of their inclusion in the Sunday Times list. While in Japan, they got the call from a store employee who mentioned a customer traveling from Preston just to visit A Slower Space after spotting it in the magazine. Mike expressed pride in their growth and gratitude towards their supportive customers.

A Slower Space is more than just a retail shop; it’s a gathering place. Customers come for a chat or to enjoy a quiet moment, making it a cherished local spot. As small businesses gain more recognition, this is a reminder of how community support can lead to lasting success.
